I am a woman on a mission. Despite having lived in Edinburgh for almost three years, I've tried very few spots for breakfast/brunch. And I want to change that! So an invitation to try out the breakfast menu at The Huxley was the perfect thing to find in my inbox. Located right at the West end of Princes Street, The Huxley is in a fantastic central location in Edinburgh. With modern, cool decor and a great atmosphere it makes a great spot for a meal. You may remember my previous review of dinner at The Huxley. I enjoyed my dinner there so much that I had real high hopes for the breakfast menu. Lucy and I headed down on a sunny Friday morning for a catch up over breakfast (or brunch, whatever you want to call it).
Normally if I'm having brunch I'll get some fresh orange juice or a cup of tea. But Lucy and I were drawn to the fresh smoothies. Lucy chose a raspberry based smoothie and my smoothie of choice contained carrot and pineapple. They were absolutely delicious. Very refreshing and a perfect accompaniment to the brunch. You couldn't tell the smoothie had carrot in it, great way to sneak in some veggies.
I have a total sweet tooth so when I see pancakes on a menu, it's very rare that I'll pass them up. The Huxley serve their pancakes big and fluffy with maple syrup and a choice of blueberry compote or streaky bacon. The pancakes were delicious and the compote was amazing. It was sweet, rich and a tad tart which perfectly offset the sugary syrup. Definitely the best pancakes I've had in Edinburgh thus far.
I finally bit the bullet and purchased an olympus pen. This meal was its first outing so Lucy and I couldn't help but try out it's features. The camera has a touch screen and takes photos when you tap - perfect for getting drizzle shots!
Lucy chose to take the poached eggs with smashed avocado on sourdough toast. Perfectly poached eggs, sprinkled with chilli flakes make for a delicious and filling breakfast. I always think that poached eggs just make the most photogenic meals, I wish I liked eggs! Lucy is a big fan of The Huxley, it's actually one of her favourite Edinburgh restaurants, so she's basically an expert on their menu. I'd trust her judgement.
We had such a lovely morning at The Huxley. The food was delicious and the staff were so kind and attentive. If you're in the central Edinburgh area and looking for something to eat, at reasonable prices then I'd thoroughly recommend it.
The Huxley can be found at 1-3 Rutland Street and you can read their full menus online.
