John Frieda Giveaway with Cohorted Ltd.

Hello everyone! Today I've got an awesome giveaway in association with Cohorted. Together we're going to be giving away some John Frieda hair care products(which are cruelty free!).

Cohorted are a new up and coming business. It's one of those websites where they sell a beauty product and if more people buy it then the price goes down. Kind of like that Buypowa thing, but better because Buyapowa got caught out for selling fake make up. At the moment they've got a few great bargains like the Urban Decay Naked 3 palette which could get up to 50% off! They also have a loyalty scheme where you get points every time you buy which you can build up plus free delivery on your first order.

We're giving away one bottle of the John Frieda Frizz-ease Extra Strength Hair Serum and 3 pots of the Miraculous Recovery Pot Strengthening Creme Masque. I've heard great things about these products and I'm a big fan of the 3 day straight!

This is a UK only giveaway which will run for exactly 1 week from today, best of luck! To enter please fill out the Rafflecopter options below!

One Year Samiversary

Exactly a year ago today I came home from work to find a large, excitable chocolate Labrador in my kitchen. Fast forward a year and I cannot manage my life without my little furry companion. I don't think you really realise just how quickly a dog becomes a part of the family until you get one. So happy one year anniversary Batdog, here's to many more happy years.

Edinburgh Science Festival Event

Hello everyone! As a few of you may have seen on Instagram this week I readed along to the Edinburgh Science Festival's bloggers event. I'm a huge chemistry geek so when I heard about this event I was really excited! I met up with a few bloggers for dinner at Clerk's Bar(so, so good) before heading along.

We arrived a bit late and sneaked into Barney's beer where some of the festival's beer was being sampled. I'm not a big fan of beer at all so I politely declined but everyone else seemed quite fond of it! From there we moved into Summerhall for the first 'experiment'. We were to extract DNA from stawberries and make a daiquiri. Extracting DNA from kiwi's is actually an experiment from the higher human biology course that I missed back in the day because I was on holiday! I really regretted missing out on that so it was awesome to get the opportunity to do it! To do so we squished up some strawberries in a ziplock bag and then added pineapple juice. We then poured this into a little shot glass filled with ice cold rum. The combination of the cold and the alcohol solidifies the DNA and you can see it floating around in the drink. Everyone seemed to think that the shot tasted of potatoes which was a bit weird! This was really cool. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get any good photos of this, they all came out blurry!

Now onto my favourite part. Liquid nitrogen sorbet. I've made liquid nitrogen ice cream twice before and it is so, so good! It makes the smoothest sorbet I've ever had. The flavours I tried were apple juice and raspberry, prosecco and strawberry and beer and orange. Most of us weren't found of the beer and orange flavour but the other two were delicious. They should make it in batch and sell it, I'd buy some! After that we just had a little buffet and sat around chatting for a while. I had to leave to get the train home quite early but it was a great night and a big thank you to everyone who organised the event!

Since attending the event I've booked tickets to see Peter Higgs talk at A Conversation With Peter Higgs: Close Up. As in Peter Higgs of the Higgs Boson particle. As in the 2014 winner of the physics Noble Prize. I AM FANGIRLING SO HARD RIGHT NOW. It's going to be epic! I also really fancied the Lady Scientists Snitch n Bitch but it runs too late for me to be able to get a train home from so I can't go, which sucks! For a full list of all of the events on click here, I'd really recommend trying to get to at least one thing!

Crochet Away

Hello everyone. I hope you've had a good week! Lately I've gotten really into crocheting. Like really, really into crocheting. I've started selling things to friends and family and it's so nice to be able to make things for people that they really like. I thought I'd do a little post showing you a few of the things that I've made over the last few weeks.

This granny square blanket is probably the best thing I've ever made. It measures 42x42" which is a little bit bigger than half of a single bed. It's the perfect size for snuggling up with and is actually a present for a friend's granny. A granny square blanket for a granny, how appropriate!

I made this hat for a friend but I think I need to make myself one as well because I love the bright red. Pom poms are also so much fun to make!

I really wanted to buy those strawberry buttons but I didn't really have anything to make with them. But then I decided to buy them and make this little phone cosy for myself. I think it looks really cute but I wish I had some yellow wool to add some 'seeds'.

This is an ear warmer that I just made for fun. My mum bought me this sparkle-y wool which I'm not overly keen on but it looks a lot better when it's all stitched up than in the ball.

And finally there's this little hat that I made for a little girl. It doesn't photograph too well because obviously I can't put it on and photograph it but I don't want to post photos of other people's kids either!

So what do you think? If you're a crocheter then link me to a few of your favourite patterns!

Review: Lush Bunny Bubble Bar

Hello everyone. Unless you've been living under a rock then you probably know that Lush have released a new Easter collection. Now I love a new Lush collection, any excuse to spend some money ae? One thing that I couldn't leave behind was this adorable Bunny bubble bar.

The bubble bar is made of a white shell which contains a pink surprise centre(spoiler alert). There are also lots of little blue cornflowers in it that float about your bath afterwards. It turns your water a pale pink and gives a nice bath with lots of bubbles. But this is too similar to Creamy Candy, a permanent line bubble bar with the exact same scent. I always turn to Lush for new and innovative products so I guess I'm just a little bit disappointed that they've just remodelled an old product and branded it as new. I don't think I realised just how similar they were when I bought it an to be honest I think if I'd known I would have given it a miss.

This bubble bar retails for £3.25 which is an ok price but when you consider that the creamy candy bubble bar is only £2.50 it suddenly doesn't seem worth it any more. Don't get me wrong. It's a lovely bubble bar but if I were you I'd save the 75p and buy yourself a creamy candy and then a bar of chocolate to eat in the bath! I have tried out a few more things that I liked a lot more so keep an eye out for those reviews!

OOTD: Last Non-Uniform Day

My time at highschool is drawing to an end and Friday was our last non-uniform day. And after today I'll only have 12 more days in high school before I'm done forever. Which is both exciting and terrifying. One thing that I probably won't miss is non uniform day. Mostly because every day at uni will be a non uniform day. I think it generally gets over hyped and people end up making it like a fashion show and not wearing what they actually wear. I really like this outfit(and I've worn it out a few times before) so I thought I'd share it for a little bit of nostalgia.

Shirt - Dress Lily
Jeans - Topshop
Boots - New Look

I was sent this shirt from Dress Lily at the start of the wear and I've worn it a lot more than I expected to. At first I thought I'd only be able to pull it off as a dressy piece but I've just realised that it actually looks pretty great with some jeans and a pair of boots. My only issue is that it's made of very thin material so is actually quite cold.

My Top 5 Female Protagonists

Hello everyone! I recently wrote a blog post called My Top 5 Male Protagonists and as promised, here is the female version. To be honest I had real difficulty picking out books for this one. I've realised that most of the female narrated books I read are romance novels, not exactly empowering or inspiring. When picking my favourite males I had so much to choose from but for this I was seriously lacking some bad ass females. I didn't even realise! From now on I'm going to make to concious effort to read more books narrated by females that aren't romance novels. If anyone has any recommendations then please let me know.

Min from Why We Broke Up by Daniel Handler & Maira Kalman
I love Min's narrative. She's recently broken up with her boyfriend(I'd tell you some more about why he's an ass but that would be a spoiler) and is returning all of his things. She's writing letters to accompany each item. I really like her 'bolshie' attitude and general 'bad assness'. I think that Min made a lot of mistakes but at the same time she came to her senses and wasn't afraid to stand up for herself when she needed to. I'd like a sequel to this because I think she'll go far in life and I want to know what she does after high school. Also I recently found out that Daniel Handler is actually Lemony Snicket and I loved the Series of Unfortunate Events books. Damn, why didn't I include Violet?

Bridget from Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding
Who doesn't love Bridget Jones. I feel like she represents just a teeny little bit of all of us. If she had a catch phrase it would be 'you were all thinking it, I just said it'. Bridget is just brutally honest in the best way. Her character is very open about everything and it's just so refreshing in a world where everyone is pretending to be calm and collected.

Carey from If You Find Me by Emily Murdoch
Carey is a 15 year old girl who has been kept in a trailer in the woods with her younger sister for nearly all of her life. In this book they finally escape and are starting to be integrated back into regular life. I love Carey's unrelenting love for her sister. It is really sweet how much she is willing to do to help her. The girls don't even know what a pencil is and it's so interesting seeing our world from the eyes of someone who doesn't understand it. Carey is a very beautiful and troubled character and it's hard not to fall in love with her.

Scout from To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Who doesn't love To Kill A Mockingbird. If you've not heard of it it's about racism in southern USA. I love Scout's narrative because she's so young, naive and blissfully unaware of what's going on in the world. Her innocence really stands out. It's funny that she seems to be a lot nicer and more respectful than half of the adults in this novel. Also I would love to have Atticus Finch as a father so when I read her descriptions of him I just pretend.

Cinder from Cinder by Marissa Meyer
Cinder is a female mechanic. This has me liking her already because I have big respect for women that work in male dominated industries. Plus she's a cyborg. How cool is that. She takes the classic Cinderella and turns it upside down. She's a a strong independent women who fights for what she believes in. I love reading her narrative throughout the book, it's great.

Next I'm going to be doing my top 5 series and stand alone novels but if anyone has any recommendations or suggestions then please let me know in the comments.

The Furry Friend Tag

Hello everyone! As I'm sure you already know, I'm the very lucky owner of the most wonderful little(big) chocolate labrador. When I saw the Furry Friend tag on Nuala's blog I knew that I just had to do it. Like I need another excuse to talk about my dog?

What is your pet's name?
Sam but he also answers to Batdog.

When did you get Sam?
31st of March 2013, almost a year ago.

What is something that Sam does that annoys you?
He whines, like a lot. As soon as you get up he's whining to go for a walk but then when you take him for a walk he starts whining like crazy as soon as he gets back in. He also mooches for food and I hate those puppy dog eyes.

What type of breed is Sam?
Sam is a chocolate labrador retriever.

Has Sam ever had a near death experience?
No but he was attacked by another dog just before Christmas and that was very, very scary.

Does Sam know any tricks?
He can sit, give a paw and beg. He also does this thing where if he's lying down and you make a gun with you hand and say 'bang' he pretends he's been shot. It's pretty awesome.

Does Sam like to snuggle?
Kind of. He can be pretty indecisive and doesn't really stay in the same place for long. He does sleep in my bed sometimes though.

Where did you get Sam?
We adopted him from his previous owners.

Does Sam get along with other dogs?
Sam if anything, is too friendly with other dogs. He normally bugs other dogs because he's sniffing at them too much and just wants to play. We don't let him off the leash with other dogs unless they're bigger than him/very excitable.

Does Sam get along with strangers?
Sam gets along with anyone who will give him biscuits.

How much does he weigh?
33kg of pure Batdog muscle.

Do you ever dress Sam up?
Sometimes I put my scarf on him for a laugh? But no, he doesn't have any proper costumes or anything.

Has Sam ever tried to run away?
Sometimes when on a walk he'll catch the scent of something and just bolt. He always comes back.

How did you come up with his name?
We didn't, he came pre-named.

On a scale of 1-10 how much does Sam mean to you?
11.

Please, please do this tag if you haven't already. I love hearing about other people's pets!

OOTD: Spring Florals

Hello everyone. It's been sunny for about an hour in Scotland and I'm already calling it spring. I'm a total autumn/winter girl but this year I'm just really looking forward to my summer break. It's going to be the longest one I've ever had and I just can't wait to chill out. With classes Monday-Friday and working Saturday/Sunday means that I very rarely get the chance to just sit about and do nothing. Bring on Summer!

Cami - Boohoo
Kimono - BooHoo
Necklace - Topshop
Earrings - One Ten Zero Seven
Jeans - Topshop
Boots - New Look
Lipstick - Mac Russian Red(not cruelty free)

A lot of bigger bloggers are being sponsored by Boohoo at the moment so I've been hearing more about them than ever. I've bought a few things from them in the past and I just decided that I'd place an order with them. When I bought this cami and the kimono I didn't plan on wearing them together but I think they go really well together, happy accident! I'm actually kind of proud of myself for ordering these, they're a lot more colourful than I'd usually go for as well.

I'm just wearing a regular pair of boots but I think that this outfit could look really fancy if paired with a pair of heels or wedges. Maybe nice enough for dinner or cocktails?
