Roomies is a novel that is co-written by Sara Zarr & Tara Altebrando* about two girls moving to college. I really like reading books that are written by two different authors as I like trying to work out who wrote what parts. Although I have to say with this I have no idea who wrote what!
So this book is written in the form of emails between two girls who are going to be room mates at college. Elizabeth(EB) lives in New Jersey and wants to move out for uni so that she can escape from her mother who she doesn't have a very good relationship with. She also knows that her dad lives very close to her new college, although she hasn't seen him in years since he left her mother because he's gay. The we have Lauren. Lauren has 5 younger siblings and had actually requested a single room. So she's not exactly pleased to have a room mate. She wants to move out so that she can have a little bit more freedom.
I really enjoyed this book because I myself am currently in the process of moving out. Whilst I have a single room I have been chatting to my flatmates online so I can kind of relate to the characters. I found the novel to be quite fast paced and I read it really quickly. The chapters alternate between the two characters and not only include the emails but little snippets of that girl's life and what they were thinking whilst writing the emails. It made the story a lot more indepth.
There were quite a lot of characters in this book and there were a few I really liked and a few I really didn't. To be honest I found EB to be a little bit annoying. She seemed very selfish and was really harsh to her mum. I know everyone is raised differently but I won't even raise my voice to my mum so reading about her being such a bitch to her mum made me really mad. The complete opposite was Lauren who was so selfless. That being said opposites attract and I do think that the character's end up really helping each other out. Another side character I really liked was Keyon's dad/Lauren's boss. He seemed to be very moral and I really liked the 'what would Keyon's dad do?' moments of the story!
The one thing I disliked about this book is that it finishes before they meet each other. I WANT MORE! I just want to find out how they got on living together and if they stay good friends or if they drift apart when making friends on their courses etc. Release a sequel please! I gave this book a 4/5 star rating on GoodReads. If you'd like to keep up with what I'm reading then you can add me as a friend on GoodReads here.
